Wherefore art thou clients?
We have asked this question, and we have been asked this question… “how do I find more clients?”.
In this resource, we are providing some suggestions on where your next client might be hiding out, no matter what stage of VA life you are at. There are many reasons why you might find yourself looking for new clients:
Are you just starting out?
Are you growing a team?
Have you finished up with clients (your choice or theirs)?
Is it due to external factors (for example – industry disruptor, significant change in the Government)?
Is it because of a major shift in your in industry?
Are you now working additional hours?
The list goes on!
Before we jump into some tips, a key thing to consider is where are your clients hanging out? If you know who your ideal clients are, then you need to think about where they are hanging out (both online and offline). For example, if your ideal client is in the professional services industries, they might be on LinkedIn. If your clients are beauty salon owners, you might find them at tradeshows or industry training events.
Make sure you are showing up in the places your potential clients hang out. Platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram are awesome to showcase your skills, share valuable content, and connect with potential clients. Join relevant groups and communities related to your niche and actively participate in discussions to establish yourself as a Virtual Assistant.
Ok, let’s get into some places you might be able find new clients:
1. Reconnecting with past and current clients:
Your previous clients are a valuable resource. Reach out to them periodically, updating them on your current offerings. Satisfied clients are more likely to return for additional services or refer you to others in need of VA. Of course, this is only applicable for those who are not just starting out.
Reach out to you current clients – can you expand with them? They may jump at the chance to take up more of your availability.
2. Reconnect with past workmates:
Former workmates can be super helpful in connecting you with new clients. Let them know about your service offerings and encourage them to spread the word within their professional networks. If you have changed industries or a totally different field, this may not work but it is worth a try. You just never know!
3. Seek referrals through friends and family:
Personal connections can play a crucial role in gaining clients. Let your friends and family about your business and ask them to refer anyone who might benefit from your services. There are many VAs who built their business purely based on word-of-mouth recommendations.
4. Get involved in networking events (both face to face and online):
Networking is one of our favourite ways to build our client base especially if you support a wide range of industries, it is more likely that you might find your clients at small business networking events in your local area. Attend industry-related events, join online communities, and actively participate in discussions. Building a diverse network can open doors to potential clients and collaborative opportunities. Depending on your location, you may or may not have a strong local networking scene, but you can always contact your local business chamber or council to see what options they have. There are also national networking groups with local chapters (like BNI) that might be your style, it isn’t for everyone, but it might just be your jam!
5. Sign up to lead networks:
Explore lead networks within the VA industry. There are quite a few! These networks can connect you with potential clients looking for your specific skills. Sign up for their lead alerts, make sure your online directory profile is up to date and always have a solid business profile ready to send to any leads that grab your eye!
6. Chat with other VAs about opportunities within their team:
Collaborating with other VAs can provide a steady stream of work. Research other VAs in your niche, introduce yourself, and enquire about potential working relationships. A lot of VAs have started out by subcontracting to other established VAs and it is such a great way to learn the ropes.
With any of these six areas, consistency is key!
Block out time in your diary each week to work on business development for your business.
Keep your website, social media and online profiles up to date – you just never know when a new client might be looking at your digital listings!
